October 2018 Boxycharm

The October Boxycharm theme for the month was Alter Ego, which I thought was pretty cool and appropriate at the same time since it's the month of Halloween (and if you don't know already, we're HUGE fans of Halloween in this house. The products that I received all seemed to fit the theme pretty well and I was happy because this was the variation box that I was hoping for. The box included an eyeshadow and face palette from PUR Cosmetics, Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in assorted shades, It Cosmetics Superhero Mascara and the other two products were variations. I received the Dermovia Lace A Peel Black Bamboo Charcoal Peel Off Masks and Farmacy Green Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm. There was much controversy over the other variation items, which included a Briogeo Don't Despair Repair Conditioning Spray and Ahava Mineral Hand Cream. People were upset (and rightly so) because the sizes sent out of these two products were deluxe sample/travel sizes, while Boxycharm promises to deliver full sized items. Although the Farmacy and Dermovia weren't quite full sized either, they were of a much higher value than the other two items, which really wasn't fair to those receiving them. There were other variations as well, which included previous items we have received in the box which opened a whole other can of worms. To be honest, I'm very glad I received the variation box I did, because I really wanted to try out The Farmacy cleansing balm! On to the product breakdown and reviews (where I'm able to). I'll try to include Canadian pricing for products if it's available, but many items we get are only sold in the US or they may be sizes/variations created just for Boxycharm.

The first item that was in all the boxes was the PUR Cosmetics Midnight Masquerade Face Palette, which contained ten shades that consisted of six eyeshadows and four face shades (although to be honest, you can use the four face shades on your eyeballs too). The eyeshadow shades only had one matte which was a bit deeper, so many were reaching into the face shades for a transition colour anyway. A lot of Charmers are tired of receiving PUR palettes in their boxes. I find the quality of these usually pretty good (although some shades can be hit or miiss). While this had some really pretty shimmers - especially the gold/green shade, this just wasn't for me. The face shades were just too dark/deep for my super pale skin and there weren't enough mattes for me to create a variety of looks. I think this palette would look stunning though for those with medium to deeper skin tones and with a subscription box, you do have to expect that the company needs to appeal to a variety of different people, so not every item will be a hit with every person. The palette retails for $38 US, so already more than the value of the box.

.

Next in the box was a Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick. This came in quite a few different shades and I received mine in the shade Hawkwind, which is described as a nude sienna. While I do love Kat Von D lippies, this shade is just a bit too dark for me and I'm hoping to swap it out for a shade that is a better match. I find these liquid lips (at least the ones I've tried) to have rich colour, they are not patchy at all and they last all day. I don't find these too drying on my lips and I reach for these a lot. My personal faves so far are Lolita II and Ludwig. The Everlasting lipsticks retail for $24 CDN or $20 US.

The item I was probably the most excited to receive was The Farmacy Green Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm. I've been hearing a lot of good things about Farmacy lately and I was actually shopping for a good cleansing balm anyway. With Halloween coming up quickly, I wanted a good balm to try out on our Halloween makeup. My husband and I usually dress up about three times since we go to a couple of parties and dress up on Halloween as well. Since we usually go all out, it takes us a couple of washes and tons of scrubbing to get all traces of our makeup off and I've heard that

cleansing balms are the way to go as they can tackle regular makeup, face paints and cream makeups. I have to say that I was impressed with this one. The scent was light and clean and it really just dissolved makeup like a dream. It took a single wash for the each of us and all our Halloween makeup was gone. It didn't irritate my skin at all, so this is a definite winner for me. My husband was rather impressed as well. The balm retails for $28 CDN or $22 US.

Next was the It Cosmetics SuperHero Mascara. Usually I'm pretty 'meh' about receiving mascara in subscriptions because I tend to get so many, but I was pretty excited to get this one. It's a great brand, it's full sized and it has a cult following with tons of great reviews. To be honest I was a little underwhelmed the first time I used this. It seemed a bit thin and liquidy. It did give me pretty good length, but it seemed to be greatly lacking in volume and my paltry eyelashes needed a coat of my Stila Huge mascara on top. This however, seems to be one of those mascaras that gets better over time. I used it again a couple of weeks later and the formula seemed to have thickened up. It gave my lashes length and volume this time without being clumpy. It lasted all day with no flaking at all. I'll definitely be reaching for it again. The mascara retails for $32 CDN or $24 US.

The final item in my box was the Dermovia Lace A Peel Black Bamboo Charcoal Peel Off Masks. We received two in our package. This by far, has to be one of the strangest items I've received. It has a tube which contains the black mask (which you need to keep away from eyes, lips, brows and hairline). You apply this to the areas needed, which is the t-zone for most people. You then place a black, lace mask over your face, which loops around your ears to hold it in place. The lace is smoothed over the mask, so that once the mask dries it's supposed to pull off along with the lace mask. I'll be perfectly honest here...I haven't tried it yet. I really don't know if I'm going to. I've seen so many people claiming it hurts to remove. A lot. I've heard of it ripping skin, taking off baby hairs and peach fuzz and leaving a lot of red irritated faces behind. I've also heard of people loving it. I just don't know if this face really wants to try out this mask. If I do decide to try it, I'm sure you will see it posted here at some point. The two lace masks retail for $30 US (yes, really). .

The total value of October's Boxycharm is $134 US and approximately $162 CDN. Excellent value this month and so many great brands included.

Final verdict?

I have to say that I really enjoyed my Boxycharm this month, even though the palette wasn't quite a hit for me, I loved the cleansing balm (which really paid for the box in itself). I'm happy about the mascara and the KVD lipstick (which I can easily trade for another shade). The masks I'm on the fence about, but we'll see how that goes and if I decide to be daring one day!!
