December 2018 Boxycharm/BoxyLuxe

The December Boxycharm and BoxyLuxe theme for the month was Tis the Sea-Sun, which truthfully didn't really have anything to do with the actual items in the month, but rather focused on it being December and holiday time. The box was pretty nice though and had a couple of items that I really wanted, which included an eyeshadow palette from Violet Voss, a skincare item from Elemis and a full set of Luxie brushes. These alone made upgrading to BoxyLuxe worth it for me. The other items I received in my box were a Tarte Tartiest Shimmering Lip Paint, which is a new product release, Wander Beauty blush and highlight palette, Grande mascara, PYT mini straightener, Spongelle body wash buffer and a makeup bag/clutch which included a portable battery charger for your phone.

On to the product breakdown and reviews (where I'm able to). I'll try to include Canadian pricing for products if it's available, but many items we get are only sold in the US or they may be sizes/variations created just for Boxycharm.

The first item that was in all the boxes was the Violet Voss Pro HG Palette, which contained twenty eye shadows that were absolutely perfect for me. There was a mix of buttery mattes, shimmery metallics and satin eye shadows. The shadows themselves are quite pigmented and apply like a dream. These blend out perfectly and work extremely well on pale skin like mine, although it would be suited for all skin tones.. The palette retails for $45 US or $60 CDN,

Next in the box was a jar of Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream. This is an anti-aging cream that is supposed to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. It contains a blend of seaweeds along with Ginko biloba, rose and mimosa. This is supposed to help with fine lines and can be used under makeup. I was really excited to get this because it's a high end cream, which I would never actually splurge on. I'm currently testing out some other skincare products though, so I haven't had the opportunity to try it out. I will definitely have to update on this one. The Elemis Pro-Collagen Marine Cream retails for $118 CDN or $89 US.which is more than the cost of the entire BoxyLuxe.

One of the items I was extremely excited to receive was the Luxie Rose Gold Complete Face Set. If you follow my blog, you already know that I'm a huge fan of Luxie brushes, so when I heard that we would be receiving a complete set of full sized Luxie brushes, I was sold. If you're not familiar with Luxie, they create well made makeup brushes that look as nice as they perform. The bristles are super soft, don't shed and wash up well. They apply and blend out eye shadow and makeup very well. This is one of my all time favourite makeup brush brands. This set includes a round top blender for contour or foundation, a tapered highlighter brush (which I already own and is my go-to), a pro precision brush for harder to reach areas of the face, a tapered blending brush for the crease or general blending, an eye shading brush for the lids, a flat definer for lining, a brow and lash spoolie and a lip brush with a slide on case to keep to clean. The brush set retails for $87 CDN or $65 US.

Next was the Wander Beauty Wanderess Dusk to Dawn Blush & Highlight Palette. This palette contains two blushes and one highlighter. These shades are a little deep for me, but they can also be used on the eyes. Wander Beauty specializes in multi use products which make traveling easier. Overall a cute palette, but not anything I was particularly excited for as the shades just didn't call out to me (plus they don't work on my skin tone). The Wander Beauty Wanderess palette retails for $26 US.

This item was actually a choice. We were offered the opportunity to choose between this PYT Mini Hair Straightener or a palette. I decided to choose this mini straightener because I thought it would be good when we traveled. The straightener however is extremely tiny. It would probably only be good for bangs or for baby hairs. Anything more and I don't think it could handle it. It does come with a cute carrying case to tuck away, but I'm still not sure this is worth the price tag. I was left wishing I had chosen the palette, which had really nice colours that I probably would have enjoyed more than this. The straightener retails for $75 US. Yes, you read that right....

Next was the Tarte Tartiest Shimmering Lip Paint in Insta-Famous. I enjoy Tarte Lip Paints although they can be a little bit drying. This however is lipgloss which you can either wear along or on top of a lipstick. The lip paint has tiny reflective bits of glitter in it, which actually looks really nice. I was worried about putting glitter on my lips, but this really has a lovely shimmer to it. This gloss is scented as well and it's to die for. When I first smelled it, I thought of cake because it's sweet and looking at the Tarte website it's described as cocoa and angel food cake. Totally yummy! The Tartiest Shimmering Lip Paints retail for $20 US or $25 CDN.

I was excited to receive a Spongelle Body Wash Infused Buffer this month. The scent was Blossom Bliss. I've never tried one of these infused sponges before and I'm curious to try it out. If you haven't used one before, the body wash is actually infused right into the sponge, which is supposed to exfoliate, massage, cleanse and hydrate the skin. The scent of this particular one is beautiful and also limited edition with Boxycharm, although you can find it on the website right now. Spongelle Buffers retail for $20 US or $22 CDN.

I have to admit...I wasn't that excited to receive the Grande Mascara Lash Boosting Formula. I have nothing against the brand at all, it's just that I'm swimming in mascaras right now and can't possibly use them all up before they dry out. The packaging on this is really nice and I would love to try it out actually, BUT, I'm going to pass this along to someone that will actually be able to use it before it goes bad. I received the shade Rich Black, which is the same as what everyone else received, I believe. The Grande Mascara retails for $25 US or $31 CDN.

The final item in my BoxyLuxe this month was a super cute faux leather wristlet from Crimes of Beauty. Inside was a mini portable charger that was compatible with an android or iPhone. While I'm not a huge fan of the charger (only because I have a ton of them already), I do really like this wristlet...mostly because of the Glam AF saying on the front of it. Plus it's larger than all the Ipsy bags I have as well, so this is definitely a keeper for me that will get a lot of use when we travel. I don't see this particular design up on the website, but I have linked through to their makeup bag/wristlet page in case it comes back in stock. I'm not sure if that was maybe limited edition or just for Boxycharm. The wristlet and portable charger retail for $22 US.

The total value of November's Boxycharm is $387 US and approximately $485 CDN. Pretty good value this month and an interesting mix of items. A Boxycharm subscription is $21 US monthly and if you would like to upgrade to BoxyLuxe (which is only offered every three months) it's an extra $28.99 on top of the regular Boxycharm subscription cost that month.

Final verdict?

I'm really happy with my Boxycharm this month, even though the straightener turned out to be so small. I could have chosen the palette (and should have - my mistake). Really though...the Violet Voss Palette, the Elemis cream and the Luxie brushes really make this box for me. I do like some of the other items as well, but the above were really wanted and these were just 'frosting' on the cake. If you would like to subscribe to Boxycharm, there is currently NO waitlist.
