Review: Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Volume III Highlighting Palette

I was very excited to try out the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Volume III Highlighter Palette. My daughter loves Tarte eyeshadows so much and they are a staple in her beauty routine. I personally haven't tried this brand out before and was quite surprised when we received one in a Boxycharm box. I had my fingers crossed that I would receive this one in particular and I did. I thought it would be the one that would best work with my colouring. The others had more pinky shades or more cool tones shades, while this one leaned more neutral.

The packaging on this palette is beautiful. It's a circular shaped metal palette that actually has some weight to it. It doesn't feel like a cheap palette as some of the ones with cardboard packaging do, yet it's still small enough to slip in my travel bag without worrying about it getting crushed. The cover of this palette has mermaid scales in bright blue and purple tones highlighted with the bright, shiny gold from the actual palette. This does include a mirror inside as well.

I'll be honest...I was a little underwhelmed when I first saw the shades in this palette. They are very light and neutral and didn't really inspire me to dip in and try to create any looks. This palette has one matte shade named tiki which is a very pale matte beige. I do wish this shade was a little bit darker. On my pale skin it hardly shows, especially when blended out. It did apply nicely though with very little kickback and no fallout. The other shades in this are all shimmery and I definitely can't hold that against this palette as it specifically is called a highlighting palette. The other shades range from a pearlescent white (treasure), to a nude pink lustre (escape), a peachy copper (rays) to the darkest shade Malibu, which is a plum bronze.

The shadows themselves feel soft and buttery. Tarte recommends applying with your fingers and I agree that this works best. I didn't have much success with a brush, but when you dip into these with your fingers and apply them to your lids, they take on a whole new appearance. I didn't experience any kickback with my fingers and had very little fallout. The shadows all applied smoothly and evenly with good pigmentation. I used an eyeshadow primer as I always do and experienced all day wear with no creasing or fading.

I tried two different looks with this palette - one using just the palette on it's own and the other mixing with one of my favourite Huda palettes for a deeper more dramatic look. In each case they blended well and lasted all day. While I was initially underwhelmed with the shadow colours in this particular palette, I have to say that I'm extremely impressed with it. Not only is the performance on these shadows great, but every time I use it, I have an excellent makeup day. I've actually received compliments when wearing these shades. The microshimmers, as Tarte calls them, just do something for my partially hooded eyes. It makes

my eyes look brighter and more open. It helps to emphasize the lid space that I do have rather than hide it like some shimmers and glitters can do. This palette really does just make my eyes pop and make me look more awake and bright. If you're looking for a good neutral palette for every day, for the workplace or to mix and match with some other palettes, I highly recommend this one. If you're a bit more mature or have partially hooded eyes, this might also be a good one to pick up. I'm in love with Tarte microshimmers. They perform better on my eyes than most other palettes I've tried. My only wish is that it have a second matte shade or that the one included was just a little deeper. The Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Volume III Highlighter Palette retails for $47 CA at Sephora.
