Review: Awake Beauty Sugar High Body Scrub

If you're not familiar with Awake Beauty, they are a sister brand of Tarte Cosmetics. Awake was created over 17 years ago and was a cult Japanese brand of skincare and beauty. They were popular for utilizing botanicals in their products without using parabens, mineral oil, phthlalates, triclosan, sodium lauryl sulphate and gluten. They are also a cruelty free brand. In 2014 they became a part of the Tarte family, bringing their products to Canada and the US.

The packaging on the Awake Sugar High Full Body Facial Body Scrub is quite pretty. The line is bright, cheery and a little whimsical. The sugar scrub is in a light purple box with metallic silver lettering. When you open the box though, it becomes more interesting and fun since there is a bright orange citrus pattern all over the inside of the box.

The jar of sugar scrub is orange as well, but with a metallic silver citrus print covering the label. The contrast in colouring is cute, while still being something you don't mind having out in the bathroom. Keep in mind all the ingredients are listed on the box and not the actual jar, if you think you might need it for future reference.

As the name implies, this is a sugar based scrub. It has a strong, invigorating citrus scent, which is actually great for the morning shower when you need a little pick me up. Besides the sugar, the scrub contains 10 oils - coconut oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba seed oil, and sunflower seed oils to hydrate dry skin. Rosemary leaf extract, orange, grapefruit, lemon, lime, and bergamot peel oils are added in as well to help energize the skin (and you) for the 'Awake' effect that the brand aims for. I've seen some complaints that people didn't like this scrub because it left them feeling 'greasy'. If you're used to using a different type of scrub, whether it be a salt, bean or coffee scrub with a non-oil base, then this will give you a different feeling.

If you have dry skin, then this would definitely be for you. Personally, I like these types of scrubs. My skin is usually on the drier side and even worse in the winter. I found I didn't need a lot of this scrub because a little goes a long way. I've used this on my legs, elbows and even my back on occasion since that's an area that can get ignored for exfoliation. This scrubs so nicely, but the sugar dissolves, so you don't have to worry about overscrubbing the skin. What's left is the oil base, which you can either wash off, or you can leave on for a few minutes if you have extremely dry skin. If you ever grew up using the bath oil beads, it has about the same feeling on the skin. After getting out of the shower, I like to use my favourite moisturizer over the areas I just exfoliated and I find that this seals in the oils and stops my skin from feeling greasy. It just helps it all sink in, leaving me with soft, moisturized skin.

Do I recommend this product? Absolutely. If you have dry skin, this is such a great product. It will gently exfoliate, so you can use it as often as you like and it really moisturizes the skin. This has some good, wholesome ingredients in it that are nourishing to the skin. I enjoyed the fresh scent to it as well. It gives a nice wake me up boost in the mornings.

Awake Beauty Sugar High Body Scrub can be found directly on their website HERE for $38 CA or $29 US.
