Boxycharm - August 2019

The August Boxycharm theme for the month is Totally Boxycharm. I'm not really sure how fitting the theme was outside of the fact that the description card was hot pink and many of the products had pink packaging. The variation I received was 2, which included a Becca Powder and Wander Beauty Facial Oil. I believe these two items were in all boxes (but don't quote me on that). The other three items were variations and mine came with a Tarte Mascara, Ace Beaute Eyeshadows and Steve Laurant Lip Liner. On to the product breakdown and reviews (where I'm able to). I'll try to include Canadian pricing for products if it's available, but many items we get are only sold in the US or they may be sizes/variations created just for Boxycharm.

The first item that I received was the Becca Hydra-Mist & Refresh Powder. I was so excited to be receiving this powder. It's formulated with 50% water and glycerin leaving behind a smooth, silky finish to the skin. The powder actually feels cool and wet when being applied to the face. It's such a unique experience that it's hard to describe. I really like using this powder underneath my eyes to set my concealer. I have very dry undereyes and this sets my concealer without it looking powdery or crepey. It also sets the rest of my face nicely while smoothing out my pores without leaving a powdery finish. I've only used this a couple of times, but I did find I needed to re-powder throughout the day because I started to look oily. I'm not sure if it's the powder itself or the foundation/setting spray combo. I'll have to test this one out further, but regardless I'll keep using it underneath my eyes. The Becca Hydra Mist & Refresh Powder retails for $39 US or $51 CA.

Next in the box was the Wander Beauty Glow Ahead Illuminating Oil. Wander Beauty is in a ton of monthly subscriptions. It seems I'm always receiving something from them. Some of the products are hits and some are misses, but this seems like an interesting product. This facial oil is supposed to absorb into the skin quickly and be lightweight while still being hydrating and providing a subtle glow. The ingredients include Castor Oil, Black Current Seed Oil and Niacinamide. This facial oil is also supposed to double as a primer underneath foundation. The Wander Beauty Glow Ahead Illuminating Oil retails for $42 US or $50.40 CA.

The third item was the Tarte Big Ego Mascara. I was hoping that I wouldn't receive this variation...not because I don't like this mascara, but because I actually already received this mascara directly from Tarte when it was first released. This mascara uses a vegan formula and has a nice hourglass shaped wand. I found it required a few coats, but overall it's a good mascara. I actually gave my other one to my daughter because I have so many open already and she loves it. She's extremely sensitive to mascaras, just like me and this one doesn't bother her at all. The Tarte Big Ego Mascara retails for $23 US or $30 CA.

Next was another variation item of the box, which was the Ace Beaute Glimmer Shadow Duo. I received the shades Iced Latte and Cotton Candy. There were two different variations for the shades received (the other being a purpley/pink and silver duo). The packaging and styling of these shadows look just like the Colourpop Super Shock Shadows, but with a higher price tag. The shadows themselves are quite pigmented, feel buttery soft and have a very pretty sheen to them. While I'm not thrilled about getting these in my box, they do seem to be a good product, but in all honestly, if I was wanting to purchase shadows like these, I would choose Colourpop because the price is much better without sacrificing quality. It is a nice value for the box though, especially for someone that may be just starting out with makeup. The Ace Beaute Glimmer Shadow Duo retails for $25 US.

The next variation item I received was a Steve Laurant Lip Liner. I received the shade Vogue, which looks brownish, but is actually more of a plum/mauve shade. The liner claims to smooth over your lips for a seamless and flawless finish, while not transferring and is supposed to last up to seven hours. I'm actually not even going to try out this lip liner, because all the reviews I've seen on this say it's dry and patchy, plus the shade is just not for me either. I'd say save your money on this one and just get a good drugstore lip liner - there are quite a few much better than this one. The Steve Laurant Lip Liner retails for $15 US.

The total value of August's Boxycharm is $144 US and approximately $180 CDN, which is higher than some recent months. I'm impressed we received a Becca product and the Tarte mascara would be great if I didn't already have it!

Final verdict? 3.5/5

This month's box was kind of meh for me. I'm super happy with the powder and will definitely keep using that in my routine. The oil is okay, but not exciting. The shadows aren't my favourite shades and I'm very disappointed in the lip liner. Hoping next month's box is a little more exciting.
