Review: Maybelline Dream Urban Cover Sunscreen Foundation

This summer I had the opportunity to travel to Maine while my husband was on a business trip. Maine is one of those places that has been on my bucket list for a while and I was hoping to road trip to one day, so when the opportunity presented itself, I jumped on it. Luckily I was able to spend even more time with my husband than we had originally thought and we threw in an extra day as well, which meant walking the beaches, visiting lighthouses and just perusing the town in general.

This meant of course, lots of sunscreen, especially being a very pale, redhead. I've had sunscreens fail me completely in the past and I'm one of those redheads that has gotten a sunburn sitting in the shade on a beach with a boatload of sunscreen and even a hat on. While I was there, I picked up the newly released Maybelline Dream Urban Cover Foundation, which is actually described as a full coverage protective makeup sunscreen with a broad spectrum SPF 50. It actually doesn't say foundation anyway on the packaging, which is interesting.

It was a little difficult to pick out my shade in the store and the website didn't offer any help. I've experienced this before with Maybelline's very hard to find any info on undertones, which is less than helpful when trying to shade match both online and in store, especially when their foundations can tend to really lean yellow or really lean pink. I chose the shade 100 porcelain and crossed my fingers.

The foundation aka makeup sunscreen, comes in a squeeze tube bottle with 1 fl. oz/30 ml which is typical for foundations. I actually like the squeeze tube. It was easy to travel with and I wasn't worried about it leaking. The foundation itself smells very strongly of sunscreen - there's just no denying that. It's pretty intense at first, but after wearing it a bit I didn't notice the smell anymore. I've actually worn this strictly indoors when I didn't really need the extra SPF protection.

The texture is a very light liquid and it blends out on the skin extremely quickly and easily. I found my usual one coat gave light coverage and went in for a much needed second one. This did worry me, because my skin usually doesn't like to build foundation at all and tends to look heavier on me. This foundation however, builds extremely well and just blends out like a dream. It's honestly the easiest blending drugstore foundation I've tried. I will say though that the full coverage description doesn't quite live up to the claims. I'd say this builds to a solid medium coverage. I tend to have pretty good skin, so if you're like me it may look closer to a high medium coverage.

I was very impressed with how this looked on my skin. The shade actually turned out to be a good match. It looked pretty natural and not heavy at all. It wore all day for me even in the hot, humid weather with me climbing over and jumping on rocks to visit lighthouses and to get some good photos by the beaches. While it's normally not typical for Maine, they were experiencing a bit of a heat wave while we were there so I did really put this to the test. Even after I was sure I had sweat all the makeup on my face still looked pretty good. I could see the foundation a bit around my mouth area and a teeny bit around my nose, but I was honestly impressed with how well it held up. It didn't sink into all my fine lines, which is huge for me. It's been a problem with many foundations as my skin gets more mature. It didn't even settle into my crazy forehead lines. That being said, I did use a moisturizer with SPF and a setting spray with SPF as well, because I burn so easily. Also to clarify, you should use a moisturizer with SPF with this foundation to get full protection.

Maybelline Dream Urban Cover Foundation retails for around $15 and you can find it HERE. I have to say...I'm really enjoying this foundation. I really wish they would release a non SPF version because I just love it so much but I don't like using SPF on my skin every day because I find my skin will react with every day use. I trusted this foundation so much, it's what I reached for when my husband and I went to the opening night of TIFF and he was walking the red carpet. It held up beautifully and my skin looked awesome all night without having to do any touch ups.

Maybelline Dream Urban Cover Foundation rating: 5/5
